The Ecosystem method basically works in the same manner as most systems. Water is drawn from the surface via an overflow box, from which it flows into a sump. This is where the heart of the Ecosystem method is located. The tank water first flows into a narrow chamber full of bioballs. These balls are submerged, not dry, and they act primarily to break up any large pieces of detritus, as well as to dissipate any large air bubbles that form from the water splashing down.
