Cloudy or dirty water can be misdiagnosed and can be caused by several different elements, take a good look at the following directions before deciding on your treatment:
1. Milky white looking water is usually a sign that you have ammonia in your aquarium, this can be toxic to fish and needs to be address quickly or fish loss will occur see Ammonia under ‘Ask an expert’ for help.
2. Green water is a single form of algae and must be treated with algae treatments return to medications and water treatments and enter the algae section for treatments the Aquarium Science Algae Clear is a very good product.
3. You may find your water has a black tea stained look this can be an indication that your water is due for new carbon in the filter a good indicator of this is a strong smell coming from your tank. If the tea stain reoccurs regularly it is often because your tank is under filtered for the level of stock you have and an investment in a larger filter will definitely help.
4. You may have recently added a piece of driftwood or timber and there are tannins leaking from the wood, they tend to make the water look quite dark again a tea stain look but it will make your water look brown. You can add a product called Biochem to remove the tannins or remove the driftwood soaking it in water outside of the aquarium until the leaking has stoped, they are not harmful to your fish and some fish actually breed better in tannin stained water, some driftwood available is tannin free.
5. You may have just cleaned your tank or added new gravel and you want to the water to clear quickly to give it the crystal clear look. Use Aquarium Science aqua clear it will clear your tank quickly and efficiently.
